Robotics;Notes (General)

Post by Maypews »

After a bit of contemplation, I've decided to put C;H on hold and pivot to R;N. It's no fault of C;H, but I think I may have tried to re-read it a bit too soon. I'll definitely go back and get all the endings later though but I want to try something new for now. This thread will contain spoilers so scroller beware.

But anyway, I read this for about an hour last night and it made a solid first impression. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the 3D models instead of sprites, on one hand I think it looks worse but on the other it's kind of interesting cause it lets you see the characters facial expressions and mannerisms in stuff. Makes it feel almost like an anime at times especially with all the CGs and cutscenes too, I can somewhat see the vision if nothing else and it does make the game memorable.

We haven't gotten too far yet, just up to the point where the Vice Prinicipal drops the "You have to win the Robotics contest thingy to keep the club" alive on them. I assume we'll probably start seeing them try to recruit more members now since it seems impossible to do it with just one real member. The MC guy is pretty cool, truly an MC after my own heart with how he's autismgrinded his way onto the leaderboard of that game he likes to play.

Have only seen all of two quotes from Frau in the intro but this screenshot/line was a gem. Big fan of Deluoode map also as well as the rural setting.

Anyway, even though I've marked this as a spoilers thread, please don't spoil details ahead of where I'm at. Cause like, that would suck for me lol. This'll be more casual instead of the essentially text-based LP that the C;H thread ended up being.

Got through the ROBO-ONE tournament. It was fun, kind of reminded me of like a battle shounen arc except with robots. I'm always a fan of that "guy who's great at video games becomes a great pilot" trope, it's great in Muv Luv and it's great here. Was actually a bit surprise to see Kaito fall in the end, but now it seems like the story is beginning to open up a bit with the new Robotics Club member.

Also, think this is the longest it's ever taken for me to see an OP before. Took so long I forgot it was even coming, at least 5 hours of reading probably. I like this one so far.

Been kind of binging this lately desu. I'm a fan so far, really like all of the characters quite a bit. That scene where Kaito goes looking for the "ghost" and comes across that spooky doll followed by the Chaos;Head sound effect was cruel btw, made me jump out of my skin.

Speaking of Chaos;Head, I wonder if we're ever going to get some insight as to why the (I think AI girl) said the Sono me dare no me line earlier in the game. That threw me for a bit of a loop.

The Kimijima Report was very interesting. My inner monologue was kind of screaming at Kaito not to go poking around in that at least not without some way of hiding his identity, but alas my screams were unheard. Of course it seems like Sawada and Misa-nee had locked onto him as a subject of interest even before then.

I'm sort of surprised that they got v& before we even got more Kimijima Reports though. The name of the file indicated there was more, so I guess I was sort of expecting it to be like S;G where we gradually walk through all of them but nope! The person in charge is none other than Nae Tennouji too.. I wonder if she took up her daddy's business and joined the Rounders.

Loving Frau so far. She's amazing, I might make a highlight reel of all her quotes in my next post. Her NEETdom also seems to have helped her here because she wasn't taken with the rest of the club... I wonder what she'll do next.

Holy shit I got trolled so hard, bravo Chiyo. Why on earth did Nae pick them up like that? There had to have been more to it than that. Well whatever, I'm glad we get more Kimijima reports because they are absolute kino. Also, the fact that the Shibuya quake is being tired into the narrative is super cool. Also also, Kai seemingly had a death wish when he climbed that tower.

Report #2 (think I'll post all of 'em here over time)

Re: Robotics;Notes First Time Read

Post by Maypews »

Been binging so much that I haven't had the time to make follow-up posts. Trying to recount everything I've seen since the... 15th would take quite a while, but I'm having a pretty great time with this. I hadn't read R;N cause I wasn't really sure if I'd like it, I found the 3d models off-putting at first glance (but actually quite like now that I've actually given it an honest try), the critical reception did not seem as high as other entries (which I'm coming to quite disagree with personally) and I'm not really a huge robot/mecha person.

The group dynamics are awesome and the game has a very memorable cast. A critic may say that the story takes overly long to get going, but personally I find it very lifelike and realistic similar to how S:G's buildup period is. Just a dorky guy on a rural island who stumbles into something shady by pure chance. It sort of makes you wonders what small mysteries may lie in the most unassuming of places, doesn't it?

I've gotten to Phase 8, which I'm a few days into. I believe this is the Airi "Route" or rather chapter. So far I've completed Nae, Juuna and Frau's chapters. Nae's was kind of whatever, we don't see her too much during the game and the chapter does little to flesh her out other than dropping her insane skill at fighting games and tits on you. It's not offensively bad by any means but pretty unmemorable.

I can't help but feel something is off about Nae, that whole bait and switch abduction thing has never set right with me. She showed up to do that without any real explanation other than vibes and then we end on this wet fart of a route? Were I to critique something about the game to this point, it would definitely be how she was utilised in the story. Was hoping for more.

Juuna's route though is very touching and meaningfully develops her character as well as Doc's. I have a bit of a soft spot for nostalgic family memories, so seeing that picture of her with Doc and the robot honestly almost made me tear up a little bit. It's nice and also gives much reason to why Juuna acts so afraid of her grandfather, and vice versa for Doc in a lot of ways too.

Frau's route is also incredible and once again helps to greatly advance her character. I think she might be my favourite SciADV girl now and that's a high bar to reach. The arc assigns great motivation for why she became such a hardcore shut-in to begin with while also providing a realistic reason for her to somewhat leave the shell. It further does so without trashing her character, very impressive character writing on display here IMO.

I really like how schizo this game is getting. That part in one of the Kimijima Reports where the author talks about how the Tavistock Institute plants bullshit fake theories like HAARP weather manipulation to weaponise against those who know the real deal made me soyface a little. This one seems to be ripping the proverbial mask to so speak off the Committee of 300, whereas in previous entries it was left large faceless or as an overarching shadowy villain that we never see much of save for a few associates like Norose in Chaos;Head.

Overall, I'm having a great time with this. It's well on it's way to a very high rating from me, and I think it's a really underappreciated title to be honest. Also, Takumi's tweeps are hysterical.

Got the Airi... chapter? ending? Not really sure what to refer to it as, but it was good. I'd give it like a 7/10 probably. Getting background for her is nice but since we don't see her all that regularly it doesn't feel quite as impactful as the Juuna and Frau stuff, but it's still nice. Was also cool to find Kimijima's innawoods house, I wonder what the connection is between him and Frau's mother given that a picture of it's interior appears in the Gunvarrel episode.

So far I'd say Nae's was decent, Airi's good, Juuna great, Frau great. Not long after this, all hell breaks loose. Just as Juuna had regained her confidence and gotten over the robot trauma... that happens. Ouch. I wouldn't be surprised if it was carried out by Committee brainwashing, though the fact that the Kagome Kagome only came after the fall is strange considering it usually seems to come before. Speaking of, didn't Kagome Kagome play when Nae carried out that bizarre heist? I wonder if that was also a case of brainwashing. Yes I'm still curious about that, lol.

Mizuka's untimely fate is very sad. You have to wonder why she's sticking her neck out to protect Misa-nee, especially when the organisation that she's apart of seems to have murdered her. Was Misa-nee blackmailed or forced into joining Exoskeleton? It certainly seems that it might be a possibility given that she seemed sad in the backstory.

I can't help but wince a little at Kaito broadcasting the Kimijima reports from his main device. If he really wanted to protect his identity, he should've bought another and put it under a psuedonym and then transferred the reports to it before opening the 7th. Bad things are definitely going to happen due to him leaking it, there's no way the Committee will take it sitting down.

RIP to the Robotics Club, may it continue to live on in spirit at the expo. Also fuck the VP, even if she seemed a little considerate after the accident trying to make them dismantle the robots is beyond overkill. I'm glad Doc went under her nose.

Well, I reached what you might call the climax and I've been binging this a lot ever since. All hell breaks loose at the ExPo and Misa-nee goes berserk. Sawada being the good guy surprised me, he seemed like a very generic Committee type but I guess that was kind of the point. The fact that the Obelisk isn't real and that they're using fake photos of Odaiba to make the situation look worse than it really is is fascinating.

I don't think I've ever seen something touch on how technology and (basically) social media can construct false realities and then beam the minto the minds of the common man quite like this has. Honestly quite predictive given that this was released in 2012. Sure smartphones existed at the time, but not to the industrial extent that they do now. It's very impressive, hats off Chiyo.

Lots of twists and turns to see here. I knew there had to be more to Nae, she seems indeed to be quite trained in her father's ways. I still wish we could get more detail on her backstory though, you'd think it could've been included in her route but man she is a bit undercooked and plot device-y feeling to me. Kimijima Kou being the "real" bad guy is another big surprise, apparently he's a silent weapon that can force people to do things against their will?

At first I thought it was saying that Misa-nee was just being guilttripped by Kimijima Kou for killing her. Of course that'd be a very weak reason to kil 5 billion people, so I'm sure she's likely being brainwashed. The game really has not told us much about how the brainwashing actually works though or what the actual significance of Kagome Kagome is, I hope we get more on that soon.

Great session for the most part, this is quite tightly written so far pending the issues I mentioned. Can't wait to see the true final showdown of Model 1 taking on the KAMERAGI. Also loved seeing the whole island come together, especially the scene with Subaru's father.

I truly do not understand why this entry seems to be held in lower regard compared to the rest of the series. The plot in my eyes is very consistent (save for one annoyance which I will talk on later), the cast of characters is very likeable, the character writing as a whole is fantastic and IMO better than every other SciADV entry up to this point for me, and it explores some rarely touched on themes that interest me a good deal.

You could perhaps say it starts slow, but so too does Steins;Gate. Though I would agree that this is perhaps a bit slower I don't think it's by a huge amount, and the main mystery is constantly developing in the background. As I said before, I think the area in which this title most obviously shines is in it's character development.

We see our apathetic protagonist go from watching Akiho work her tail off alone to forming a strong sense of comraderie with the Robotics Club, we see Frau (kind of) grow out of her shut-in lifestyle and the understandable things that caused it, the dynamic between Juuna and her grandfather is very touching and well executed and both change quite significantly from their "arc", and we also see Subaru's father grow to accept his dream and Subaru himself as he warms up to the club. I would say that Akiho and Nae are slight letdowns, but the overall cast is very well-handled.

Most of the other entries do not flesh out the entire cast to the degree that R;N does, they tend to focus more on protagonist. While this is not an inherently bad style of narrative structure, I do think that successfully fleshing out a larger cast is more impressive from a writing standpoint and deserves it's flowers.

It also touches on some interesting things. I like how Kaito views his progress up the KB leaderboard as a sort of metaphor for wanting to surpass Misa-nee in general, and I love how the story ends on a positive note in this regard. It is also just nice to see competitive gaming represented in something for once, many times you have gamer protagonists but rarely are they a top player at whatever it is they do. In this respect the novel presents a positive message; that no hurdle is too big to overcome, and that if you put your heart and soul into it you can scale any wall.

Furthermore I find the aforementioned predictive nature of the way in which information networks can be used to construct false realities very poignant. This story was written in 2012. While smartphones existed at the time, they had not yet become ubiquitous to the extent that they are now. We now see how most information is drowned out in a sea of false narratives and fragmentations, and essentially the Committee's entire plot is based around the use of these misinformation tactics.

I think this is a very interesting message, one that is very ahead of it's time. While the whole "Is what your eyes perceive truly real?" is a running thematic throughout the series, I do not believe that it is done in quite the same fashion that it is in Chaos;Head for instance here. In R;N silent weapons are utilised to quite literally construct an artificial reality that cannot be seen through, whereas in Chaos;Head we never see how it affects the common person, it's largely only ever used on targets of interest.

I view silent weapons as almost something as a metaphor for how easily narratives and power structures can be shifted by the concerted efforts of just a few powerful individuals. The game showcases the paradigm of how social media and the nature being always connected to the internet via PokeCom(which is essentially just a smartphone) can be used to whisk common people off into artificially constructed realities. It's very well done and hauntingly accurate.

The group dynamic is of course incredible, I adored that scene where the Robotics Club got up in a huddle and psyched themselves up before the final showdown. Although I'm not much of a mecha person, this novel convinced me to watch some Gundam for the first time in part because of how much the robots grew on me. ROBO-ONE was a lot of fun, and I am bit sad that we did not get to see Subaru and Kaito go to the tourney that was hosted in America.

If there's one thing though that bothers me a bit, it's that it feels like the brainwashing aspect is not very well explained. Most of the plot points seem rather tied up, but I don't quite get how Kimijima Kou has Misaki wrapped around his finger. This is a man who attempts to murder two of her closest family members, and she kills him in turn. Okay sure, I can understand how she'd be guilty over that.

But I don't think it makes sense for a character who's portrayed as this lofty unobtainable ideal throughout the game to be manipulated into killing 5 billion people over it. I know it is stated that Kou has some sort of special ability in this respect but it is not really ever elaborated on. This is a pretty sizeable issue in my opinion, not game ruining but it makes it stack up somewhat unfavourably at least from a scientific standpoint compared to the other entries.

As for session-specific screenshots...
he's just like me fr

People will think it's wild when I say that most of the time I consider the Robotics Club to be my personal favorite cast out of the entire series and then not read R;N to find out why.

Glad you enjoyed peak, May.
