Moderation Log

Post by Maypews »

As laid out in the rules, I am a strong believer in light moderation and I don't really want to take any kind of action at all unless absolutely necessary. With that being said, in the interest of total transparency, whenever some moderative action is taken it will be posted in this thread.

As of the 11 month mark of Deluoode, only 3 moderative actions have been taken to this point;

Temp-banned user key for being underaged, which will expire on his 18th birthday.

Promoted dokyun to global moderator/super hacka.

Went back and retroactively edited some user posts in the Chaos;Head, Robotics;Notes, and Higurashi threads to contain spoiler tags. No alterations beyond this were made to any posts.

This is not so much a log of moderator action, but a warning. We recently had an incident where one user was able to essentially give himself infinite upas via discovery of an exploit in the Ultimate Points extension. This exploit would normally never be found by a normal user and requires the use of a script in order to pull off. The moderators were not informed prior to usage.

To be blunt, if this had been pulled off by an account that had joined the site yesterday that account would more than likely be permabanned. Since no rule was in place yet and nothing terribly destructive was pulled off by the user in spite of their having free reign to do so, no action will be taken this time around. But in the future, if you find something like this please notify me before using it.

I am not necessarily banning the use of third party scripts on the site so long as they are not deliberately circumventing core site functionality. If you do want to do the latter as apart of some sort of joke or roleplay or something, PM me first so that I'm aware. I enjoy a little bit of mischief, having guys around here pulling off hacker stunts is funny and goes a long ways towards making this place feel authentic to the 2000s, but I don't want this lenience to turn into people finding vulnerabilities and griefing the site either. A rule has been added to the corresponding webpage to reflect this change.

Much discussion on this matter has already occurred via PMs, but I'll repeat a few things publicly here. I'm sorry for any scare I caused @Maypews. This sort of mischief was commonplace on my old main forum up to and during my time on there, so I didn't see this as really any more than some lighthearted mischief, but I won't do something like this again. I plan to return my inventory back to how it was before all this upon request, as they're all just decorations anyway. Now that a rule has been made on this, I will report stuff in the future instead, though I don't plan on poking around anymore. This was just an idea I came up with late last night for what I had found to be a funny exploit.

P.S. Funny enough, I suppose I'm not a normal user, but I actually didn't discover this via a script at first. I actually stumbled upon the Ultimate Points extension in my github feed seeing as it received a new commit 5 days ago after quite a while without any updates, and I was curious what might have been added. I ended up seeing that the lottery file had been changed, and took a peak to see what was new. It was there that I first noticed the exploit-prone code.

Devil's advocate: I think shit like this is hilarious and you should keep doing it. Actually finding bugs yourself and writing your own exploits, you deserve to have a bit of fun with it IMO. I'd hate to keep people away from hacking in good faith, and bug hunting does a good service to the site. May gets the final say of course, but that's my 2¢.

If you want, @TheEvilShadoo, you should make a thread documenting your exploits in more detail, post some working code, it'd help us try and patch holes if they turn out to be a real problem.

The elephant in the room is that I'm not really a programmer and so if something happens to the site I may not be able to fix it. Like I think its funny too, there's a reason I was cool with the Gelbana Delivery Service. I am fine with people pulling stunts like these if they find something and also happy to reward them for doing so (I let Shadoo keep the items he bought with the Upas that he wants), but I would like to know the details of the prank they're planning and the bug they found in confidence first so that I can know that it won't seriously mess with the site or be very difficult if not impossible for me to reverse.
